Union City issued the following announcement on Nov. 11
In recognition of Veterans Day, the City of Union City held a small, socially-distanced outdoor event yesterday at Veterans Memorial Park to recognize its employees who are U.S. veterans. In total, eleven veterans who represent the City’s Police Department, Public Works Department and City Manager’s Office were recognized, with members of the Alameda County Fire Department also in attendance. Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci lead the special recognition and a moment of silence for those who have lost their lives in war.
Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci states:
“We are indebted to not only the many veterans who live and work in Union City but to all veterans in the United States. It is important that we also take a moment to remembers the lives that have been lost, as well. We are fortunate to have a number of veterans on staff who remain just as dedicated to serving this community.”
The City’s Public Works Department placed a commemorative flower wreath at the memorial in Veterans Park, and the community is invited to visit the monument and park on Veterans Day. Per guidance from the Alameda Public Health Department, visitors should wear face coverings and maintain physical distancing.
Veterans Park is home to the Veterans Memorial, which was updated and unveiled at the park on November 11, 2017. The focus of the Veterans Memorial is a hexahedra granite monument, with each of the six sides representing a different branch of the military – the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard. The column is surrounded by memorial bricks that are individually dedicated to service women and men. The improvements and memorial were dedicated thanks to Alameda County Supervisor Valle and his office who supported the funding and development efforts.
